(May be due to Dialnorm.) Lower volume (level) with LPCM vs Bitstream isn't uncommon, but even adjusting for volume level, I still preferred bitstreaming Dolby Digital/DTS to the Receiver as it also shows the codec used on the Receiver's display (vs 'PCM').
